March 1930 COLUMBIA RECORDS "New Records" - original United Kingdom Mailing List catalog-
An original 1930 Columbia Records mailing list catalog featuring their latest recording releases in Great Britain for March of that year.
Columbia Records was founded on January 15, 1889, having evolved from the American Graphophone Company, the successor to the Volta Graphophone Company. Columbia is the oldest surviving brand name in the recorded sound business, and was the second major company to produce records.
Today, Columbia is one of Sony Music's four flagship record labels, alongside RCA Records, Arista Records, and Epic Records.
This 8-page March edition of Columbia's English monthly newsletter catalog for 1930 recording offerings has a period engraved cover illustration with featured releases of: "La Tosca" Complete Opera; Sensational First Records of "The Rio Grande"; "Scheherazade" First Section; Cassado In Schubert Concerto In A Minor; and Regimental Marches, Medleys, etc.. Interestingly, this catalog's cover has been hand-stamped by the distributor; "Walter Naylar, 208 High Street, Rochester"
. Mr. Naylar owned the Walter Naylar Gramophone & Music Saloon in the English city of Rochester at the time. Inside, record listings feature Columbia Records' catalog numbers and pricing in Pounds Sterling for each title.
Sections of this "March Columbia Supplement (No. 174)" include: Orchestral, Instrumental, Musical Comedy,
February Mid-Month Supplement (No. 173),
Grand Opera "La Tosca" (In Italian), Orchestral and Band, Vocal, Popular Orchestral and Band, Popular Instrumental, Popular Vocal, Humorous, Descriptive Humorous, "New Method" Dance Recordings, Descriptive Ballad, Famous American Dance Bands, and Regimental Marches & Folk Dances for Schools.
Notable entries for this March 1930 mailing list catalog include works by: Sir Henry J. Wood conducting The New Queen's Hall Orchestra;
Milan Symphony Orchestra; Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire Paris conducted by Philippe Gaubert; Regal Cinema Orchestra conducted by Emanuel Starkey; Gaspar Cassado; Van Phillips and His Band; Ted Lewis and His Band; "La Tosca" by Bianca Scacciati and Alessandro Granda; "The Rio Grande" by the Halle Orchestra conducted by the composer; Dame Clara Butt; Trevor Watkins; The Choir of St. Nicolas College; Albert Sandler and His Orchestra, Regimental Band of His Majesty's Grenadier Guards, Raymond Newell, Norman Long Entertainer on the Piano, Jack Payne and His B.B.C. This is a rare time capsule of recorded music released by Columbia Records in Great Britain at the beginning of 1930
at a size of 5" x 7.5" folded, with eight panels that fold out to a full 20" x 7.5. A very clean example with normal age coloration, an unobtrusive corner crease
on the front and back covers and a couple of areas of light foxing which do not effect the display potential or page turning. The pages of this
mailing list catalog
are mostly in excellent condition for a piece that is nine decades old.
