Description
To appreciate this tray fully, back story is needed. I found this silver tray tarnished as black as it could be in a local Dallas estate sale. My specialty has always been silver, and I can usually tell the difference between silver plate and sterling from 50 paces. You just develop a knowledge of color, weight vs. volume, etc. There isn't a hallmark on this, but I guarantee it is at least 800 (80%) solid silver. I suspect it is 95% silver because of softness and Latin style and provenance.More about that. The estate sale was for an Oil & Gas geologist (lots of those guys in Texas!) who had travelled SIGNIFICANTLY to South and Central America. Everything in the house reflected those trips. Now, I can't tell you WHERE this piece came from exactly, but it screams something bought locally on one of the guy's projects. Argentina? Peru? Venezuela? Mexico? Some small Central American country? Don't know. But, it does explain the absence of markings.
OK, you know what I know now.
Tray measures 6" in diameter. It has a 1.25" rim decorated in scrolls, 8 flowers, shells, and leaves. It has been (somewhat amateurishly) engraved: "Presented to M. D. Daud to D. M. Lawleresor".
See condition comments in the section above. Small 1/16" edge tear. Rim bends. One central ping. Lots of tarnish.
Total silver weight is 58 grams.
The item listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my knowledge. If you have a question on an item prior to purchase, please ask. Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.
Please see "About me" for the contract legalese. Boring, I know, but essential. Always happy to pass through discounts on combined shipping.
