Historical note
“Solferino”, the French battery battleship of “Magenta”-type, was launched on June 24, 1861. “Solferino” and “Magenta” were the only two battery ships in the world with the two-deck (double-deck) location of guns, which allowed to increase the number of guns without increasing of the length of the ship, and to increase the striking range. The battleships of this series were equipped with a battering ram made from forged iron that could effectively penetrate the underwater part of the enemy. The ships’ hull was assembled from wood and paneled with forged iron armor.
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, the both ships were on standby. On October 31, 1875, “Magenta”, being in the harbor of Toulon, burned. “Solferino” was scrapped in 1882.
