Description
Charming c1650-1750 Continental European Hand Chased Silver Scroll Handle CupPresented is an interesting antique silver cup, made somewhere in continental
Europe, possibly of Austro-Hungarian origin. We aren't sure of the age exactly,
but it dates to within around 1650-1750. The cup is beautifully hand chased with
detailed floral scrollwork designs all around the exterior. The handle is done
in an ornate scrolled form with beaded texturing along the outer edge. The cup
rests on three ball form feet. The underside has a monogram of LHB in flowing
script, which is much newer than the cup itself, though the monogram is still
over a hundred years old.
The underside of the cup is stamped with two hallmarks, one of a lion passant
gardant in an oval shaped punch beneath the number 1; another partial hallmark
of a crown above a shield with a cross in the center. Unfortunately we aren't
sure where these marks are from, though based on the style they are likely a
city mark and a silver purity standard. We have tested the cup and guarantee it
to be at least 800 purity silver.
This piece is in great overall condition. There are two little splits to the
right side of the handle, but these are not very noticeable without careful
inspection. There are no other splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram
removals, and no repairs.
The cup measures about 3 inches from handle to opposite side of the rim, or
about 1 ¾ inches tall.
The cup weighs 44.3 grams or 1.6 regular ounces.
