STEP WEDGE X-RAY FILM QUALITY ASSURANCE PHANTOM
The Step Wedge performs two important quality assurance functions:
1)
It helps to determine the condition of the processing chemicals.
2)
It may indicate the possible need for exposure calibration.
The Step Wedge is made from an aluminum alloy with an average density which approximates that of teeth. Not unlike a small staircase in appearance, its ten steps ascend, each increment thicker than the previous step. When the Step Wedge is placed on a piece of X-Ray film, exposed and then developed, the resulting image will be that of ten shades of varying densities from light gray to nearly black. This, of course, is obtained when all exposure and development factors are correct. By comparing a film taken under these conditions against subsequent test films taken on a daily basis, problems with either exposure or development will be discovered quickly.
