The Ritter family immigrated to America from their farm in the Rhenish Palatinate province of Germany in 1846. They eventually settled in the Kensington area near Philadelphia, Pa. It was there that Louisa Ritter's homemade preserves launched the Ritter family into the food
business back in 1854. Her husband Philip delivered the preserves by horse and wagon throughout the Delaware Valley. Eventually the family kitchen was outgrown and production facilities were established in Philadelphia. These facilities were financed with the profits generated supplying ice cream and baked goods to the Union soldiers encamped near Washington DC. Ritter Catsup won gold medals at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876 and the Chicago's Columbian Exposition in 1893. In 1917 a cannery was established along the Cohansey River in Bridgeton, NJ. During WWII Ritters supplied their food products to US armed forces around the world. In late summer long lines of horse drawn wagons and trucks waited to unload their baskets full of red ripe Jersey tomatoes to be simmered into Ritter Catsup. The spices added during cooking created a rich aroma that enveloped the town and is fondly remembered by travelers to the Jersey shore.
