Historical note
The vessel was the first passenger steamer to be designed for transatlantic transportation between the ports of Bristol and New York by "Great Western Steamship Company". It was laid down at the Patterson & Mercer shipyard in Bristol. As the first specially built transatlantic steamship, it was the largest of its kind to have been built before, with a wooden hull and the propeller wheels, which were used as a propulsion system. In addition, it had four masts. The sails not only played the role of an additional propulsion system, but also had to serve as a stabilizer in the stormy sea, so that the propeller wheels were always in the water.
In 1838-1840 it covered the way to New York in 16 days on average, and in the opposite direction - in 13 days and 9 hours. In 1842, “Great Western” was transferred to the Liverpool-New York line. In 1855, “Great Western” was requisitioned by the British government for military use. Together with “Great Britain” and other ships, it was used to transport troops in the Crimean War. After returning to commercial operations, the owners were no longer interested in “Great Western”, and at the end of 1856 it was sold for scrap.
