Santisima-Trinidad (Spanish: Nuestra Senora de la Santisima Trinidad - The Holy Trinity) - Spanish three-deck battleship 1st class designed by the Irishman Matthew Mullan in Havana and launched in 1769.
The hull and deck are entirely made of Cuban mahogany, and the masts and yards - of Mexican pine. The thickness of the sides’ outer plating reached 60 cm. Being equipped after the reconstruction with 140 guns (thirty of which - 32-pound guns on the lower deck), the 63-meter ship with DWT 4902 t was the largest sailing combat ship of her time.
During the American War of Independence, Santisima Trinidad was sent to intimidate the British in the English Channel. For its low maneuverability, she was called "Heavyweight" (Spanish: El Ponderoso).
In 1795, she was re-equipped into the first-ever four-deck ship with an increased number of guns up to 140 items. Despite these measures, two years after, she was almost captured in the battle at St. Vincent. During the Battle of Trafalgar, the giant sluggish ship with a crew of 1,200 men, with which 7 English battleships had been simultaneously fighting, remained afloat despite significant damage. After the battle, they tried to tow him to England for repair, but a strong storm began and the Holy Trinity sank.
