Protoype Info From Full Throttle:
The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as "Pennsy," the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pennsy, employing about 250,000 workers, set standards for railroading in North America! PRRwas so huge, controlling 10,000 miles of rail line, and having merged with, or had interests in over 800 railroad companies, it's budget exceeded that of the U.S. Government! In 1968, the Pennsylvania RR merged with rival, New York Central Railroad, forming Penn Central Transportation Company, and adding the New York, New Haven and Hartford RR in 1969. A series of unfortunate events forced the Penn Central into bankruptcy in 1970. In 1976 the Penn Central system was transferred to CONRAIL, and was then split by Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation in 1991.
With the expanding economy and industry after WWI, the necessity for larger coal cars than the typical 50-ton hoppers became apparent. Coal-fired electric plants became omnipresent, and improvements in technology led to a 70-ton, 3-bay hopper, used throughout the 20th Century!
